Released in October 1969, the songs were recorded between January and August of that year, and the album was their first to be produced by Jimmy Page. Six of the nine tracks are the band’s own, the other three being covers of American blues songs. The album reached #1 in the USA and UK charts, and opens with ‘Whole Lotta Love’: this was never released as a single in the UK while the band were active, but was used as the theme for Top of the Pops and so became very well known, and was also the closing number at their concerts for several years in the 1970s.
