‘Purple Rain’ was the first Prince album to reach number 1 in the USA Billboard chart. It did so in style, climbing to #1 a month after its release in June 1984 and staying there for 24 weeks, and remaining in the Top 200 for over two years. Released to accompany the film of the same name, the album is home to the singles ‘When Doves Cry’, ‘Let’s Go Crazy’, ‘I Would Die 4 U’, ‘Take Me With U’, as well as the title track. It has sold a huge 25 million copies worldwide, and is regarded as a classic of its time.
